It's that time of year...the next few weeks are going to be filled with temptation and it's going to be hard to resist. We may have the best of intentions to stay fit and healthy, but it can be a challenge when faced with so many savory tweets and gifts that are sweet. The excuses are easy, and it's easier to say "who cares, I'll watch what I eat after the holidays", than to watch what you are taking in.
Here are some of our tips for a healthy holiday season:
1. Determine what you are not going to eat, and what is going to make you feel deprived.
You more than likely have the same traditional holiday meal every year or are given the same sweet treats from your co-workers...so imagine it in your head and think about the foods that you definitely want to eat, the ones you need to stay away from and the ones that are safe to over-indulge. Think about how you will feel after eating them, and what foods will make you feel really good.
2. You can always add more.
Waiting about an hour after you eat is the best time to have dessert. Start with a small piece and enjoy it with a cup of tea or coffee. You can always add more, but chances are you will be perfectly content.
3. Eat before you leave.
Eating some fruit or vegetables before a main meal or a holiday party will give your body some nutrition and make you not as likely to feel hungry later on in the evening.
4. Drink before you eat.
Have a glass of water or seltzer about a half hour before your meal. This will help to fill your stomach, make you less hungry and less likely to overeat.
5. Take a break before dessert.
Go out and get some air -- maybe play with the kids or take a walk around the neighborhood before dessert. This gives the main meal a chance to settle and gets you up and moving!
