Botox® and dermal fillers are composed of biologically derived ingredients which yield safe products with minimal side effects. Typically, side effects stem from the actual injection and not the products themselves. Redness and swelling at the injection site is most common, and usually resolves within a few hours. The side effect that can be more inconvenient is bruising. Treatment from the best clinicians in the world can still lead to bruising - it has more to do with your body’s reaction to the injection than it does the person doing the treatment. You should be careful to choose a clinician who is experienced in providing injections in delicate areas such as around the eyes. |
Here are some tips to help you minimize the likelihood of bruising with injection treatments:
1. Unless you've been prescribed medications for a specific condition, stop taking medicine and supplements that can thin your blood for seven days prior to your appointment.
Aspirin Excedrin Ibuprofin (Advil®, Aleve®, Motrin®)
Omega 3 Fatty Acids - Fish Oil St. Johns Wart Vitamin E
Ginseng Ginko Biloba Ginger
Garlic (supplement form 7 days, food form 2-3 days)
2. Refrain from drinking alcohol for 1-2 days prior to your appointment.
3. If you know you are prone to bruising, try applying Vitamin K cream or Arnica cream, an herbal remedy that has been used for centuries to promote healing, reduce pain and inflammation and bruising.
4. Don't do any heavy exercise or anything else that raises your blood pressure for the rest of the day. More blood pumping through your body means more blood pumping to the injection site.
Also, we strongly recommend not receiving ANY injection or chemical peel treatment less than a month before a very important event. Although the chance of a bruise or redness remaining longer than a month is small, it’s not impossible and we want you to look and feel confident that your skin looks amazing!
